The Vajacial is a ‘vagina facial’ and it’s a thing

Move over bejewelled bikini lines. The Vajacial is here.  What’s a Vajacial you ask? It’s exactly what you think it sounds like: A facial for the vagina.

Jessica Frampton and Florence Gaven-Rossavik are the owners/founders of Toronto’s Fuzz Wax Bar, a spa entirely specializing in body hair removal. They say their spot is the first and only place in Canada to introduce the Vajacial. Not surprising, they say it’s already become one of their more popular treatments which is probably what they were banking on.

I was a guest of Fuzz for a Vajacial treatment to see if it worked. While the skin did feel very soft immediately after the treatment, the results were better a few days afterwards.

The five-step process should take place about one to two weeks after you’ve already had a wax or shave. The treatment starts with a wipe down of the area before exfoliation begins.

Then a light scrub is applied before the technician removes any ingrown hairs with tweezers. (This can be a bit uncomfortable.) The fourth and final steps are the use of a “high-frequency wand” to zap ingrown hairs. Finally a moisturizer is applied to calm and soothe the skin. The treatment takes less than 25 minutes and costs $50 ($40  for Fuzz members).

According to skin care line Dermalogica’s education manager, Holly Sherrard, treatment like this one work when you take care of your skin as part of a daily routine. “You can minimize the chances of conditions such as pimples, fine lines from dehydration and ingrown hairs from arising,” says Sherrard. She also debunked a few beauty myths about the skin and we thought you needed to know:

MYTH: The skin on the body (as opposed to the face) does not need moisturizers.
FACT: When the seasons change, we may feel we can cut out or minimize body moisturizers, however it is important to maintain regular hydration on all body parts throughout the year.

MYTH: The skin on our body can handle anything.
FACT: You can’t over scrub.

MYTH: We don’t need SPF in the winter.
FACT: We should wear SPF year -round including underneath our sheer panty-hose – the legs are the most forgotten body part when applying daily SPF.

Ready to try this treatment for yourself? Here is a short Q&A with Fuzz Wax Bar founders about the Vajacial:

Why do you think there is an increasing popularity of treatments for this area for women?
Bikini area grooming as a subject has become less taboo and women are now more comfortable talking about it. Because the skin down there is different, it should be treated differently than the rest of our bodies.

Do you recommend (the treatment) for everyone?
Absolutely. Shaving and waxing often leads to ingrown hairs as well as other skin issues, and that is where the Vajacial comes into play, so we recommend it to regular waxers and shavers. That being said, the Vajacial can also be a great pampering treatment for anyone who wants to give their parts down there a little extra care.

Can you do this as A DIY treatment at home?
We don’t recommend doing the full treatment at home since the Vajacial involves ingrown hair extraction (with a hypodermic needle) and the use of a high-frequency machine that you won’t have at home. But as exfoliating and moisturizing are also important parts of the treatment – we recommend these to be easily incorporated in the daily beauty routine.

How does the “high-frequency” work?
High-frequency is an advanced skin treatment, which benefits all skin types and helps clear up skin conditions such as acne and breakouts. A glass electrode is filled with a Neon or Argon gas, where a high-frequency current is conducted onto the skins surface.

What do you think is next trend in terms of personal grooming for the nether regions?
We’re hearing a lot about new beauty services developing for the bikini area, such as botox injections, rejuvenation treatments and even plastic surgery! We believe that consumers’ attention to this area is only going to grow.
